GC09: Sony unveils $299 slim PS3 (Updated)

The worst kept secret in the industry is now official. Moments ago at GamesCon ‘09, Sony revealed the latest offering of its PlayStation 3 console. The new slim PS3 will include a 120 GB hard drive, a Dual Shock 3 controller and HDMI output. The hardware itself is 32% smaller, consumes 34% less power and will hit store shelves the first week of September. All for $299 U.S. Dollars!!! Rumors of a slim PS3 have been swirling for quite some time. As late as yesterday, confirmations of a price drop started coming in from various retailers. Likewise, the last couple of months has seen various suspicious videos and photos of a slimmed unit finding their way online. Regardless, Sony stayed understandably mum on the subject. It will be VERY interesting to see how this new unit and price point affects Sony’s position this generation.
