The retro-revolution continues (or as I like to call it ‘Screw new ideas, let’s recycle old properties for quick cash’) today with the announcement that Earthworm Jim will coming to just about every console based digital service available. Gameloft and Interplay will be releasing the title later this year for Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network and for some reason WiiWare (the game is already available for Nintendo’s Virtual Console). Likewise, the deal allows Gameloft to produce the title across a number of platforms – meaning an iPhone version is very possible.
The press release has Gameloft senior vice-president, Gonzague de Vallois, gleeful with excitement:
“We are delighted to partner with Interplay to bring Earthworm Jim to multiple downloadable platforms. The game, with its humorous and edgy style, is a great fit for today’s gamer who craves a fully immersive experience that is fun and easily accessible. We look forward to delivering a fantastic game.”
I suppose this means that the title won’t be a straight port. Could we be looking at a Turtles in Time Re-Shelled-like scenario? I, for one, hope not – the original title was pretty perfect as it way. Interestingly, this announcement has nothing to do with Sega’s 20th anniversary title vote that’s still going on.
