Part of my disdain for the Left 4 Dead series (and yes, I own both – that’s how much of a sell out I am) is that its seemingly taken up all of Valve’s time from more pressing matters: Namely finishing the episodic content for Half-Life 2, a project they started way back in 2006. Well now Game Informer is claiming to have inside knowledge that Episode 3 won’t see release until 2011 (if even then). Adding, the title may be scrapped altogether in favor of Half-Life 3.
What’s particularly aggravating about all this is that unlike StarCraft 2 or Diablo 3, both of which lacked firm release dates, Valve was very specific about their timetable for this episodic trilogy. Episode One would be released in June 2006 and conclude with Episode Three by Christmas 2007 .
Now, don’t get me wrong, delays happens. However, since Episode Two’s release in October 2007, we’ve heard nothing about the project. Three years is a bit much any way you slice it – especially for downloadable content.
That said, with the ludicrous amounts of money Left 4 Dead keeps generating for Valve, its a surprise they’re considering Half-Life 3 at all.
