As Matt Stafford was intercepted for the first time in his game against the Saints tonight, likely sealing the fate of the Lions season, the crowd was electric. There was only one way they could be calmed down to be quiet for the Saints eventual easiest touchdown of the evening. If anyone’s gonna quiet a crowd it could sure only be one man. And it’s not the girl wearing Sith face paint. As a bonus we did learn that under his helmet, Master Chief somehow wears a backwards baseball cap, has a ginger beard, and is followed by a girl who can make an amazing Tobey Maguire face. (more…)
So you might have noticed a complete stoppage in our posting. Don’t worry, we’ve haven’t given up, rather we’re preparing to move to a new home. Starting next year we’ll be relaunching on a new site, with a new name and a new identity. Fear not, however, we’ll still bring you the gaming editorial you’ve come to know (and hopefully) love. Likewise, we’ll also be expanding our focus to other genres including movies, television, gadgets and more. The Bad Cartridge podcast will be coming along as well.
The reason for this change up is to allow both properties (BC and the new blog) to continue to grow at their best and fullest. Dividing attention between two big endeavors has been a lot of work – and I feel like giving both sides center stage is the better move. I’m not ready to announce a launch date yet, nor the site’s new name. All of this will be revealed in time. Just know that we’ll be launching before the Spring. The sooner, the better. Also, Dave, Chris, Ben and myself will all be there. We’ll be joined by some others. Its looking to be a lot of fun, we hope you come along and join us on our new adventure. I think you’ll enjoy what we’ve come up with.
In the meantime, you can always check back on this site for updates. Likewise follow us on twitter @badcartidge. Or join our Facebook page.
Holidays and missing limbs be damned! There is video game news to be discussed and we’re the only team up to the task. Well, that’s not entirely true. There may be other gaming podcasts out there, but how many injure themselves during live webcasts? How many question the sanity of Sony’s new handheld console? Or point out the horrible flaws in the new Xbox 360 Dashboard? We start where the others stop, people! Are you a bad enough dude to listen to our latest episode?

Achievements have been around forever and aren’t going away any time soon. Sure, maybe we didn’t call them achievements back in the day, but there were benchmarks that we all worked toward, and that were only to be seen by those in the room at the time. Achievements have matured, and are commonplace now, but still have room to grow. We’ve changed from a group of storytellers to a bunch of data hounds, but it’s still not too late to recapture some of that old fun.
In the era of video game cartridges our best feats of gaming were preserved solely in our own minds, or if we were lucky enough, by a friend who had just witnessed us blazing through Battletoads, knocking out Mike Tyson for the first time, or making it through Contra without the Konami code. Back in this time gaming achievements weren’t so much definitive accomplishments as they were stories. Game collections weren’t so much lists as they were a row of neatly shelved cartridges that could be thumbed through. While some may argue that the lack of proof hurts the validity of some childhood gaming triumphs, it’s the very cloudiness of memory that makes them such compelling pieces of quasi-nonfiction. There are times in a person’s life when they have to ask, wtf? srsly, wtf? Truckers Delight is one these times; srsly. Its as if this trucker never grew up beyond 16 years old and sees everything is 16 bit.
Some people pretend to be Superman. Some poeple pretend to be important. Some people just imagine the most amazing version of themselves; in a world in which that makes sense. Check after the break to see what means for our digital friend; the trucker. (more…)
For the last couple of weeks, YouTube sensation and gun afficiando Freddie W (along with an A-Team of internet video luminaries) have been working on their new series Video Game High School. Funds for the project were raised via a successful Kickstarter campaign, where – somewhat amusingly – a pledge of over $9000 would net you a Co-Producer credit on the series, as well as personal video recreating the infamous “Over 9000″ Dragon Ball Z meme. No one bit. Probably because it was too good an opportunity to pass up, partly because they’ve been short on YouTube content during filming of their web series, Freddie W has created said video and released it to the world. Yes, this is very loosely video game-related, but hey, its a slow news week. Video after the break. (more…)
You’ve got to hand it to Bethesda, they sure can design the hell out of a digital world. The land of Skyrim is nothing short of beautiful and YouTube user Wren the Reaper has really out done himself with this wonderful time-lapse video showcasing the lands varying scenery. Now, if only this much effort had been put into character animation and additional voices. Can’t win them all I guess. Video after the break. (more…)
This week’s iOS game of the week is NFL Flick QB, which is essentially a fancy version of Paper Toss with a fresh coat of paint. The game, which has access to the full NFL license, puts you in the shoes of a quarterback, either tossing passes to a receiver or competing in small skill contests. It’s nice to see all of the NFL logos in the game, but disappointing that the names of receivers seem to be randomly generated, and that they’re never actually the current wideouts playing for the team.
NFL Flick QB follows in the footsteps of it’s predecessor, Flick Soccer, but seems to have a bit less content. Controls are intuitive and will be familiar for anyone who has played other releases by Full Fat Games. You flick up to throw the ball, and can curve it mid air by rapidly swiping to either side. The throw will be affected by wind or by how straight you swiped upward to throw it. A slight curve in the motion can be used to your advantage though, and a perfectly straight swipe isn’t always ideal. You can also survey the field by moving a finger back and forth at the top of the screen, but it’s never useful as you’ll track your receiver’s route automatically, and can see blitzers coming with an exclamation point indicator. 7:00 in the morning came all too quickly considering the night before. I rolled over and hit the alarm clock while wondering exactly when the train left. After getting confirmation that the train left in 25 minutes, I bolted awake. After a quick shower and run to take a look at our boards I put on my beerham shirt and was ready to go. I got a little inspiration grabbed a snus then threw my 3DS, Boston hat, and iPhone into a bag. I made the train by a couple minutes and grabbed an open seat. There were more people than I expected on the train but it didn’t really bother me, because it’s Zelda day.
In my rush I forgot all the essentials, forgetting some water, an energy drink, my sunglasses and things like that. I was still pretty exhausted though, and just wanted to get some rest. Luckily the sound of the children crying was removed after a few short stops. I was ready to take a nap, but after browsing on my phone a bit I realized I was already at Harlem/125th and that I’d arrive soon. Grand Central was electric. I shouldn’t have been surprised, but for whatever reason I expected to be arriving in a calm New York City, but the bustling activity woke me up a bit, so I was grateful for it. (more…)
What a momentous week this has been for indie-hit Minecraft. Yesterday saw the release of their long-awaited iOS app. Today marks the game’s official transition from beta to fully fledged completed title as well as the start of Minecon in Las Vegas. What better way to celebrate these milestones then with some wide-eyed reactions to Minecraft? I will say, however, that I’m a little worried about that one kid’s set of yellow front teeth. He either has a 2 pack-a-day habit or some shitty parents. Actually, I’m just gonna assume the latter is a given either way. Video after the break. (more…)
